About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain experience working as a Senior Police Lawyer in the Specialist Legal and Litigation Division (SLLD) of the Victoria Police Legal Services Department (LSD).

Victoria Police's LSD provides legal services and advice to support policing, courts, and the Victorian Community. The LSD is led by an Executive Director (who is also the organisation's General Counsel) and employs over 800 staff spread across four divisions – the Office of the Executive Director; the Specialist Legal and Litigation Division; the Courts and Prosecution Services Division; and the Legal Business Operations Division.

Positioned within the SLLD, the Royal Commissions and Inquiries Legal Unit is seeking two (2) VPS4 Senior Police Lawyers to assist various work areas with legal advice and case management. The successful applicants will be tasked with responding to the legal needs of the Yoorrook Justice Commission Response Taskforce. The Yoorrook Justice Commission was established to investigate into and report on contemporary and historical injustices experienced by First Nations people in Victoria. The Senior Police Lawyer roles will also involve supporting other areas within Legal Services Department, on an as needs basis, and subject to the legal demands of the Yoorrook Justice Commission Response Taskforce.

Your duties will include:

  • Case management of legal functions in response to the Commission including:
    • Responding to Notices to Produce
    • Supporting the drafting of witness statements
    • Supporting witness briefings and hearing preparations
    • Monitoring Commission proceedings for legal issues and risks
    • Preparing legal briefings and advices
  • Preparing advice on legal, policy and compliance issues for Royal Commission responses
  • Managing and supervising junior lawyers and legal support staff, including by providing legal supervision as required to Police Lawyers and supporting their professional development
  • Liaising with and providing legal support to internal stakeholders
  • Supporting the development of legal reference materials on various topics
  • Liaising with external legal representatives, as required
  • Drafting legal advice on a range of topics across Legal Services Department.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer and possess or be eligible to hold a current Australian Practising Certificate which authorises the holder to supervise legal practice by others (unrestricted)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for the provision of legal advice and for engagement with internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate and motivate as a senior member or leader of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and respond to client and stakeholder needs
  • Sound understanding of the professionalism, ethics and integrity required to manage high risk matters having regard to the State of Victoria's obligations as a model litigant and the integrity and reputation of Victoria Police.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Two (2) x full-time, fixed term positions available (until 30 June 2025)
  • The salary range for a VPS4 role is $92,332 to $104,762.  Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required).
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
