About the role: 

The Senior Policy Advisers works within a team supporting the Manager, Performance Improvement to monitor ambulance and emergency department performance among public health services and hospitals, providing tailored support and improvement strategies to improve access to timely emergency care. 

As a new function within the branch, the role will contribute to work that establishes and implements the branch's approach to support public health services and hospital improve ambulance and emergency department performance, taking into account whole of system patient flow enablers. 

The Senior Policy Adviser will be required to lead and support key policy initiatives and projects that relate to new and emerging issues and risks relating to ambulance and emergency department performance among metropolitan and regional health services. Demonstrated competency in monitoring and understanding ambulance and emergency department performance as well as the associated drivers, well developed analytical and conceptual skills, relationship management and the ability to influence and work with stakeholders to deliver service and system wide improvements are expected.

The position will also contribute to the strategic coordination of corporate, project management and budget reporting (and other ad hoc reporting as required) across the team.

To be successful in this role, you will be a high performing team member with strong policy development and systems thinking skills; complemented by superior communication – written and verbal, problem solving, and project management capabilities. You will also have experience in monitoring program budgets, analysis and presentation of data, and ability to work flexibly to respond to a range of emerging issues and evolving priorities.

Suitable applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Provide high quality policy advice, options and recommendations to senior management and government based on comprehensive research and analysis.
  • Monitor and report on high priority issues, risks and trends and prepare and present reports, ministerial briefs, and Cabinet submissions.
  • Manage key unit projects to include setting up, monitoring and managing contracts with external providers to ensure high quality outputs are delivered within agreed timeframes and budget and results can inform policy development.
  • Represent the department on key stakeholder committees and groups concerned with achieving government and departmental objectives and contribute to relevant committee and governance processes.
  • Forge strong connections across the department and with the health sector to share information and facilitate a partnership approach to implementation of key initiatives.
  • Coordinate and develop complex briefing products for Cabinet, Ministerial, senior departmental executive and executive sector stakeholders.
  • Work across multiple projects, including engaging with stakeholders, and working in multidisciplinary teams to meet emerging pressures and demands, as required
  • Keep accurate and complete records of your work activities in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's records, information security and privacy policies and requirements
  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and for that of others in the workplace by working in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate how the actions and outcomes of this role and work unit impact clients and the department's ability to deliver, or facilitate the delivery of, effective support and services.
