The Office of the Secretary at the Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) comprises a number of functional areas including policy, business operations and transformation.

About the role

As Senior Policy Officer, you will be working on a priority project and will be responsible for working effectively as part of a small project team to deliver generational policy reform, including:

  • engagement across the departmental and external stakeholders on key reform initiatives and project deliverables
  • supporting the team to deliver long-standing policy, practice and cultural reforms, 
  • providing responsive, considered and expert advice and high-level support to the Manager, Director, Secretary, Board of Management and Justice ministers
  • driving and building a strong culture of collaboration and the team's high-performance

Reporting to the Manager, the Senior Policy Officer will be responsible for contributing high level policy support to a high-functioning team and delivering generational reform to improve responses to sexual assault and sexual offending, within a complex and politically sensitive environment.

About you

We are seeking a motivated individual with a solid research and policy background, coupled with a strong interest in Aboriginal health and wellbeing issues.

As the preferred applicant, you will possess strong written skills, excellent stakeholder management capabilities and knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues relating to Aboriginal Victorians.

In addition, you will ideally possess:

  • demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with the Aboriginal community.
  • a demonstrated understanding of the Victorian Government's commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and be able to identify and deliver measurable outcomes that align with the overarching Aboriginal self-determination agenda.
  • demonstrated policy development and analysis capability, including the ability to achieve objectives within tight timeframes
  • an understanding of the justice system, including the issues and pressures to which the department and government must respond.
