About the role:

Reporting to the Team Leader, Environment Protection, the Senior Environment Protection Officer – Contaminated Land and Landfill is a member of a team responsible for leading EPA’s on-ground regulatory response to contaminated land and landfills in the North East Victoria region, including education, compliance monitoring and inspections, and managing non-compliance via regulatory notices and enforcement action. You will use your initiative to prioritise tasks and monitor workflow in delivering frontline regulatory operations, aligned to EPA’s strategic priorities, to prevent harm to Victorian communities and the environment from pollution and waste.

This is an exciting role for an operational regulator that wants to contribute to the success of the EPA as it enters a new era of environmental protection in Victoria. You will actively contribute to a positive organisational culture and ensure you achieve the highest standards of performance and integrity; and foster genuine partnerships across all levels of government, industry, and community to support the delivery organisational outcomes.

 

In this role you will:

  • Under the direction of the Team Leader, Environment Protection and working closely with the Team Leader, Field Specialists – Contaminated Land, plan and deliver regulatory actions focussed on landfills and contaminated land to prevent harm to communities and environment from pollution and waste through education and engagement, compliance monitoring and inspections, and managing non-compliance with environmental laws via regulatory notices and enforcement action.
  • As the place-based expert on contaminated land and landfills, provide expert advice and support capability building in the region; actively participate in the conduct of investigations (under the direction of Environmental Crime Branch); and the delivery of preventative projects and compliance programs aligned to EPA’s regulatory priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with co-regulators, duty holders, communities, local governments and other partners to drive improved environmental and public health outcomes from contaminated land and landfills; and provide local intelligence to inform EPA’s strategic regulatory priorities.
  • Comply with all legislative, policy and process obligations and requirements in the conduct of regulatory operations; achieve the highest standards of performance, accountability, collaboration, ethics, and integrity.

Skills and experience:

  • A relevant tertiary degree or qualification is desirable.
  • Significant experience in the management and/or regulation of contaminated land and/or landfill
  • Knowledge of environmental regulation as it relates to pollution and waste is desirable.
  • Management skills and demonstrated capability to plan, monitor and deliver projects / programs consistent with organisational priorities, including risk identification and management, budget development and management; optimise the allocation and use of resources; and evaluate project / program effectiveness.
