Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the North East of Melbourne and state-wide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our purpose, which is to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.
About the Department of Respiratory & Sleep Medicine
The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Austin Health provides care to a large number of patients with respiratory and sleep disorders. The most common sleep disorders we manage are obstructive sleep apnoea, insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. We also look after many patients through the statewide Victorian Respiratory Support Service. This Service supports patients with respiratory failure as a consequence of neuromuscular diseases and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Many patients with sleep disorders have poor sleep hygiene, unrealistic sleep expectations, poor self-efficacy and difficulty tolerating or co-operating with treatments.
About the role
We have had an outpatient Insomnia Clinic at Austin Health for many years. It has previously been staffed by two clinical psychologists, but we currently have only one clinical psychologist employed to deal with the overwhelming workload. From August 2015 – February 2022, we have also had two Masters of Psychology students supporting two clinics each week, under supervision from their academic institution. Initially, these students came from the Cairnmillar Institute, but more recently we have had students from RMIT. RMIT is no longer able to support student placements at Austin but preliminary discussions have occurred with Professor Dot Bruck from Victoria University with the possibility of a small number students from that institution completing placements here at Austin in the future. However we need to assess our needs and develop a model for delivering a sustainable sleep psychology service.
