Occupation: Legal

Salary Range: $90,067 - $102,192

Work location: Melbourne | CBD

A focus on teamwork and a customer-centric approach to service-excellence is essential to this role.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is seeking a talented junior lawyer in the role of Solicitor. This position will work primarily in the areas of administrative law and statutory interpretation, commercial (contracts and major projects) and litigation and dispute resolution, with an element of the role also focused on general government in-house legal practice. The position may also have exposure to areas of the department's broader legal practice including energy, building, natural resources management and emergency management.

We are seeking a talented junior lawyer with some experience under their belt and who is capable of working under broad direction in the practice areas referred to above.

This is an opportunity to step into a general government legal role at the heart of the environment, land, water and planning sector.

While this is a junior role, there will be opportunities to step up and take the lead on certain projects. Therefore, this role will suit candidates who take initiative, are self-starters and have good research skills – they come to work, roll up their sleeves and are happy to respond to the work that comes in on their desk and are adaptable to the team's needs.

As you juggle a variety of different policy areas, you will be interacting with and supporting a broad range of stakeholders. It goes without saying your stakeholder management skills will be second to none. Your highly-developed communication, stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills will be utilised as you navigate complex issues, conversations, expectations and the general demands and priorities of the role. A focus on teamwork and a customer-centric approach to service-excellence is essential. Your work style naturally lends itself to contributing to an inclusive and team-oriented workplace culture that is collaborative, professional and engaged.

If you want to contribute to an exciting and busy department in one of the Victorian public sector's most diverse practice areas, we welcome your application.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • An Australian lawyer, within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria), holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate (mandatory).
  • Demonstrated capability in providing legal advice and litigation management under broad direction in at least two of the following key practice areas: administrative law and statutory interpretation, commercial (contracts and major projects) and litigation and dispute resolution.

This is an ongoing position.

To be considered for this position, applicants are encouraged to submit a resume and cover letter (no longer than 2 pages) summarising their skills and relevant experience.

For further information please refer to the attached position description.

Applications close at midnight on Sunday, 14 August 2022.
