This position includes a Speech Pathologist (Grade 2) – Acute Services role – temporary part time – 32 hours per fortnight (parental leave) AND a Speech Pathologist (Grade 2) – Home Based Rehabilitation Program – permanent part time – 48 hours per fortnight role.

About the facility

The Barwon Health Speech Pathology service provides Acute Care (University Hospital Geelong), Rehabilitation and Subacute Care (McKellar Centre) and Community and Mental Health services for the Barwon South West Region.

There are various Speech Pathologists as well as Speech Pathology Allied Health Assistants employed within Barwon Health who work in wide range of clinical areas to clients with swallowing and communication disorders.

Speech Pathology staff are supported in their professional practice by attendance at professional development opportunities, regular review of evidence based practice, professional supervision and access to training and competency packages.

About the Home Based Rehabilitation Program

Barwon health’s HBRP is a team of 13 allied health staff (Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Social Workers, Allied Health Assistant and Admin Assistant and Co-ordinator). The team provide rehabilitation to clients in their homes after an injury or illness. The program services an interesting and varied caseload including:

  • Post-acute episodes e.g. Stroke, ABI

  • Exacerbation of neurological disease, e.g. MS

  • Deconditioned following general surgery/prolonged hospital stay

  • Degenerative neurological disease e.g. Parkinson’s disease

  • COPD

  • Palliative clients

  • Slow stream rehab clients 

About the roles – Acute Services

The Speech Pathologist (Grade 2) will provide and maintain high quality speech pathology services to clients of Barwon Health’s acute program at University Hospital Geelong.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing assessment, diagnosis and management of acute outpatients with disorders of swallowing, including video fluoroscopy & FEES.

  • Implementation of appropriate clinical management procedures based on diagnostic and prognostic indicators and technical knowledge.

  • To counsel clients, family and significant others on the nature of, and coping with stroke, communication & dysphagia disorders

Home Based Rehabilitation Program

In this role you will work with clients to resume their domestic, community and leisure activities by practicing in 'real life' environments. Your role will involve collaborative goal setting with clients, assessment and management of clients who require Speech Pathology input across the Greater Geelong, Bellarine, Golden Plains and Surf Coast regions. You will have broad experiences in home and community rehabilitation, and a commitment to interdisciplinary team work. This is an excellent opportunity in a flexible work environment within a dynamic team. The team is based at two sites at the McKellar Centre and at Sydney Parade in Geelong CBD. As the successful applicant you will have a recognised degree in Speech Pathology (or equivalent), solid clinical post graduate experience and be eligible for membership to Speech Pathology Australia.
