Heywood Consolidated School is situated in South Western Victoria on an extensive site. The town of Heywood (population 1200) is 25 km north of Portland. The school population is drawn from the town and surrounding farming districts.
Heywood Consolidated was formed in 1950 with the amalgamation of a number of schools from surrounding areas. It provides the only primary education in the town, but works closely with the Heywood and District Secondary College. Additionally we have established strong links with the pre-school providers and we are proud of our extensive transition program from Pre-school to Foundation. The Heywood community values their school and its place within the community.
An important part of our school is the local Koorie community, Gunditjmara people and we have close links with the Windamara Corporation as Koorie students comprise 25% of our total enrolment. The local culture enriches many aspects of the school including the acknowledgement of major events and activities and GCLS is taught in all grades across the school.
Currently our school has 110 enrolled students, 8 teachers and 7 support staff. Together we provide 5 classrooms and specialist teaching in Physical Education, Music, Science, Steam and Art. We have strong performing arts and sporting programs and our school has gained many awards in these areas.
Our staff works collaboratively to support all of our students to achieve their potential. We do this through professional learning teams that investigate our literacy, numeracy and wellbeing team programs. We are building a strong professional learning community. We provide our students with every opportunity to support learning in all curriculum areas as well as a focus on mental health and wellbeing.
