Technical Assistant (multiple positions)

  • $53,280 - $68,421 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Casual – 6 months
  • Usual hours of work: Casual (flexibility may be available)
  • Usual work location: Horsham (flexibility may be available)

Your Role

The position will be on a casual employment basis with hours varying each week. The position will assist in genebank activities including seed storage under long term conditions, and the regeneration of accessions with low quantity and/or quality seed stocks. This operation requires high levels of quality assurance to ensure the genetic integrity of accessions is maintained, and prevent contamination between accessions, through all phases of plant growth from seed preparation to harvest, through to storage in the genebank.

Your Skills

  • Experience in plant production under field and greenhouse conditions for a range of grain crops.
  • Knowledge or experience in ex-situ genebank activities including packing seed for client use, preparation of seed for regeneration, the maintenance of genetic integrity to produce high quality seed of grain crops, and post-harvest preparation for long term seed storage.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, to operate under minimal supervision and show a high level of initiative and effective time management skills.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively work in a diverse team and interact with a range of people including clients, colleagues and scientific staff.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in relation to standard Microsoft Office programs as well the electronic management of workflows using barcode systems, and in collecting, recording, and maintaining scientific data.
