My journey so far

I started my professional career in information technology. I've since gained experience and qualifications in human resources, information systems, project management, process improvement and leadership.

Having led and managed a variety of teams across multiple industries including banking, telecommunications and higher education, I discovered my passion. That is building high performing teams, and driving continuous improvement and innovation.

Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to have amazing mentors who have supported me in making career decisions. I've also worked hard to get to where I am today. 

I'm currently the Executive Director of People and Culture at the Department of Justice and Regulation.

My day-to-day work

No two days are the same. However, each morning usually starts with a meeting to discuss any urgent issues, and to plan the day ahead. 

On any given day, I could be in the office looking at Cabinet submissions, meeting with the Secretary or Deputy Secretaries, reviewing strategic or corporate plans, and perhaps even later visiting a prison or Justice Service Centre outside of the CBD. My role is incredibly varied.

How my work contributes to the Victorian community

The department I work for (Department of Justice and Regulation) leads the delivery of justice and regulation services to keep the Victorian community safe — ensuring the rule of law is upheld and rights and responsibilities are respected.

My work is to help the department attract and retain the right people so that they can perform that role and at the same time support the community.

For instance, in some parts of the organisation such as in corrections and youth justice, we're often working with people who are disadvantaged and vulnerable. So we need to ensure we have the right people working in those roles who carry responsibility for the welfare of offenders and young people.

That's why it's critical our staff are getting the right training and development, that they are safe and well, and that their conduct reflects the values of the Victorian public sector.  

Public sector opportunities like no other

One of the biggest benefits of working in the Victorian public sector is being able to make a real difference to the Victorian community. And you're surrounded by like-minded people who also want to positively impact society.

It's rewarding work too. For instance, today, some in my team are training youth justice staff in how to provide structure and skills to young people in the criminal justice system. Giving these young people new life skills increases their chances of rehabilitating, and getting their lives back on track — often despite very difficult personal circumstances. That's how you can make a difference.

I also love the exposure to broad portfolios ranging from Corrections and Youth Justice, through to Consumer Affairs and Civil Justice. There aren't many organisations where you get such opportunity. 

Flexibility is a big bonus as well. I can be there when my family needs me.

Experiencing diversity and inclusiveness

Diversity is celebrated at the department. We take pride in creating a positive and inclusive workplace. 

I’m proud of the work we’ve done in Koori inclusion such as our Koori Employment Strategy and our Koori Cultural Respect Framework. Creating an accessible environment for those working with a disability is also close to my heart. Our work continues to provide improved support and opportunities.

Also, members of my team and I have been involved in LGBTI Pride Network initiatives and departmental programs to help enhance LGBTI awareness and inclusive practices in the workplace. I am proud to work for the Victorian public sector where diversity is both supported and celebrated.

I am most proud of the team I lead. They are great people who are passionate about the work they do. It's important work that we do. And work that I'd say we're all proud of.
